We'd much rather invest the effort on a cross-platform app with a best-in-class player engine under the hood, so as of today we're taking our Windows app out of the store. Back when we first started developing Windows apps, it made a ton of sense to embrace the ecosystem, but over time (👋 Windows Phone 💀) it made less and less sense to keep investing dedicated development resources to the Metro platform. It's been a little broken for a while now. Plex has retired it in favor of the new app. In regards to the former, the Plex Microsoft Store app is no more. With the introduction of the new app, however, Plex is making some big changes regarding its Microsoft Store app and Plex Media Player. What was previously called "Sync" is now just known as "Downloads," a way to download your media to your device to take with you on the go.

The new Plex app "has all the glorious player capability of Plex Media Player, plus an exciting new offline capability," according to the Plex team. The new app is meant to take over as the main way to handle and watch all of your Plex content and it contains the same server and library management capabilities as the web app.

Designed according to the representational state transfer (REST) software architectural style, the Plex API uses standard HTTP verbs and a RESTful endpoint structure. Plex for TouchPad has plenty of slick visuals and smooth transitions, but there's something that's keeping this app from working well, and all the slickness and smoothnes in the world can't cover that.Plex today launched a new desktop app, simply called Plex. The Plex RESTful web service application programming interface (API) is a collection of public endpoints that provide access to resources and data in the Plex manufacturing cloud. It's priced at $2.99, versus the $4.99 asking price for the iOS app. Plex is a beautiful, complex work of art, but it's not near ready for primetime. Or you can rant about how this app you bought isn't living up to expectations. On the bright side you have wonderful options in the app like sharing between friends using social media like Twitter with your videos and music only. Trying to use the online video channel would not load properly and the movies would stop the player completely.

Of course, using a big desktop monitor or TV is the ideal scenario for Plex, and it excells there.Īfter going through all of the motions, the only media that the webOS Plex app would play or stream were the local videos and music. On the flipside, the iPad (thanks to restrictions from Apple) could see locally-stored music and video and some online sources, while Plex on the TouchPad could view all of our local and online media. Things worked better through the webOS browser, but you don't need the webOS app for that then, do you? Compared to the iPad Plex app, everything on the TouchPad, be it the app or in the browser, was slow as molasses to load. We had a hard time seeing the media on the TouchPad app, which is a pretty big deal considering that's what the app is supposed to be used for. Now, with that said there are some major bumps in the road we encountered. It uses the network and the device's inner workings to its advantage and then some. The great thing about the app once it gets running it is really beautiful and smooth. The setup process also includes entering your network address and some other bits - we'd like for it to be less complicated, but there's only so much they can do and still maintain easy interoperability between devcies.

You'll also need to install Adobe Flash or Microsoft Silverlight to get things running. It's kind of important.įirst of all, you'll need the Plex Media Server app for your desktop that makes its media available to other devices running Plex. The system does requre a little bit of setup, so be sure to read and follow the directions.
PLEX WEB APP ANDROID
Plex, a well-known app for TV-connected devices as well as on iOS and Android has finally made it it to the webOS App Catalog, but as a third-party solution, not officially from Plex. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a hip bookstore coffee shop sipping your latte or traveling across country you can now watch and listen to all of your computer-stored media on your TouchPad, all over your local WiFi network, plus a plethora of online sources. Remember when you used to tell your mom you’re going to the multiplex down the street with friends? Now you can tell her you’re going to the Plex on your TouchPad. Developers have taken great strides to make it easier and to share your media across many platforms and across various networks. In today's digital age things have advanced beyond shelves of CDs to piles of apps to manage the myriad sources for our digital consumption. Not only are our devices even smaller, let alone that boom box you used to carry on your shoulder. Technology has come a long way since the digital media was first introduced with the Compact Disc.
